Description
The Flagship Mid-Range Module from Canadian Solar
The Canadian Solar 550W HiKu6 (model CS6W-550MS) represents two decades of refinement in P-type Mono PERC technology. Launched as part of Canadian Solar’s mainstream HiKu6 platform, it has become the default specification on thousands of installation quotes across Kenya — and there’s a reason for that consistency.
Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ) was founded in Ontario in 2001 by Dr. Shawn Qu and now ships modules to more than 160 countries. The HiKu6 platform was specifically engineered to balance three competing priorities: high power output, manufacturing reliability, and a price point that scales for both residential and large commercial projects.
What the 144-Cell Half-Cut Architecture Actually Does
Older 60-cell and 72-cell panels used full-size cells wired in long series strings. When one cell was shaded, the entire string suffered. The HiKu6 cuts each cell in half — creating 144 smaller cells arranged in two parallel sub-arrays. This delivers three measurable benefits:
- Resistive losses drop by ~25%. Smaller cells carry less current per cell, which means less I²R loss inside the panel. You get more usable watts at the connector.
- Partial shading recovers gracefully. If a tree branch shades the bottom row of cells, only the lower sub-array drops out. The upper half keeps producing at full power.
- Hot-spot temperatures fall. Smaller cells dissipate heat over a smaller area, reducing the risk of localised damage from shading or soiling.
Built-In Degradation Protection
Canadian Solar applies proprietary anti-LID and anti-LeTID treatments to every HiKu6 cell during manufacturing. Light-Induced Degradation (LID) and Light- and elevated-Temperature-Induced Degradation (LeTID) are the two biggest enemies of P-type silicon panels. Untreated, they can rob a panel of 3–5% of its rated power in the first 12 months. The HiKu6 mitigation cuts that loss by up to 50%, which is why the warranted year-1 degradation is just 2% (and the year-25 floor is 84.8%).
Recommended Configurations
The 550W is the panel most Kenyan installers default to when sizing systems between 2kW and 10kW. Typical configurations:
- Apartment / studio: 2–3 panels with a Vestwood 3.5kW hybrid inverter and 5kWh battery
- Standard 3-bedroom home: 5–6 panels with a Vestwood 6kW hybrid inverter and 10kWh battery
- Large home with AC: 8–10 panels with a Vestwood 8kW hybrid inverter and 15kWh battery
- Retail shop or small office: 10–15 panels with a Vestwood 10kW three-phase inverter
STC Electrical Data
Tested at 1000W/m² irradiance, 25°C cell temperature, AM1.5 spectrum:
- Pmax: 550W
- Voc: 49.6V
- Isc: 14.0A
- Vmp: 41.7V
- Imp: 13.20A
- Module efficiency: 21.5%
- Maximum system voltage: 1500V DC
- Operating temperature: -40°C to +85°C
- Mechanical load: 5400 Pa snow / 2400 Pa wind
Build Your Complete System
The 550W HiKu6 pairs naturally with the Vestwood Hybrid Inverter range and Vestwood Lithium Battery bank. With Voc of 49.6V, you can string up to 10 panels per MPPT input on a 500V hybrid inverter — covering most residential designs in a single string.
