Walk into any solar shop in Nairobi and you’ll find rows of 12V lead-acid batteries — the workhorses of Kenya’s off-grid economy. They power everything from security systems in Karen estates to solar lighting in Turkana homesteads. But lead-acid has three fatal flaws that cost Kenyans millions of shillings every year.
